Whether you are recently diagnosed with diabetes or just want to learn how to better manage your condition, Baylor can help. The Baylor Ruth Collins Diabetes Education Center offers specialized diabetes programs and services for patients with diabetes and their families.

Programs

The following Baylor Diabetes Self-Management training programs are offered at Baylor Ruth Collins Diabetes Education Center. Our programs help individuals of all ages learn how to successfully manage diabetes.

> Diabetes Self-Management Training Program for Type 2 Diabetes
This 8 - 10 hour, multidisciplinary program covers a full range of lifestyle and disease prevention topics. The program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

> Diabetes Self-Management Training Program for Type 1 Diabetes
A comprehensive assessment and review of self-care behaviors. A one-on-one and group education program is designed to meet individual education needs.

Team members include a Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse and Pharmacist, who may also be Certified Diabetes Educators who helps participants plan meals and make better food choices at home and "on the go". They empower participants to:
  • understand diabetes and possible complications
  • manage their disease today and for a lifetime
  • use their own blood glucose monitor and interpret the results
  • develop coping skills

> Pre-Diabetes Education Program (Impaired Glucose Tolerance)
Designed specifically for people diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The program focus is centered on a healthy lifestyle with a comprehensive assessment and meal planning with a registered dietitian.

> Diabetes During Pregnancy
Designed specifically for pregnant women whose pregnancy has been complicated with diabetes. The program consists of intensive, individual meal planning, blood glucose and ketone testing instructions, exercise plans as recommended by the physician and insulin therapy when required.
> Insulin Pump Program
Comprehensive assessment, education and support for individuals choosing to use an insulin pump.

> Medical Nutrition Therapy
With the focus on meal planning and using a variety of tools, a registered dietitian assists individuals who need additional support and education in food management.

> Diabetes Type 2 for Adolescents
Comprehensive family approach to the assessment and education of both established and newly diagnosed children and adolescents with Type 2 diabetes.

> Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS)
The CGMS system is designed to monitor blood glucose levels. A flexible plastic sensor inserted under the skin measures and records an average blood glucose value every five minutes for up to 72 hours. The information from the sensor is then downloaded to a computer and detailed graphic reports can be printed. A physician will review the data with your diabetes educator and make recommendations for changes in your diabetes plan, if necessary.
