Osteoporosis Fall Prevention Tips
If you currently have osteoporosis, you need to be especially careful about preventing falls because your bones are more fragile and can break easily and not heal well.
To reduce your risk of falls:
- Discuss possible side effects of any medications you are taking with your physician to determine if any can cause dizziness or lightheadedness.
- If you have diminished vision, hearing, muscle strength, coordination or reflexes, understand that this may affect your balance.
You should also consider making changes to your home to reduce your risks of falls. This can include:
- Removing loose wires, cords and throw rugs from floors.
- Reducing clutter and making sure rugs are anchored and smooth.
- Keeping furniture in the usual places.
- Installing grab bars and non-skid tape in tubs and showers.
- Having halls, stairways and entrances well lit.
- Installing non-skid rubber mats near the sink and stove and cleaning spills immediately.
- Making sure treads, rails and rugs are secure on all stairs.
