Michael A. E. Ramsay, M.D., F.R.C.A.
President, Baylor Research Institute

Michael Ramsay, M.D., is president of the Baylor Research Institute (BRI), which provides cohesive and coordinated research efforts for all of Baylor Health Care System's (BHCS) medical centers in their pursuit of scientific and clinical research. In addition, Dr. Ramsay is the chief of service for the department of anesthesiology and pain management at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and also serves as the associate editor of
Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings, a quarterly Baylor research journal.
Established in 1984, BRI matches its research efforts with the strengths and expertise of the medical staffs at Baylor Dallas and other Baylor medical centers throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth region. More than 600 active research projects are currently underway in immunology and transplant immunology, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, robotic surgery, dermatology, digestive disease, metabolic disease and genetic metabolic disorders, oncology, organ transplantation, orthopedics, fertility, and diabetes. A Clinical Trials Office has been established to assist researchers in all clinical areas.
Currently, there is a major focus on epidemiology and best outcomes research, so evidence-based best practices can be developed. The BRI's goal is to pursue unique, clinically relevant research opportunities. These strategic research initiatives will improve the care of patients and the community and enhance Baylor's name as a referral institution. The results of the institute's research-basic, applied and clinical-are reported in major medical and scientific publications and at national and international medical conferences.
BRI also partners with the medical industry to develop its technology and intellectual property. The institute is supported by philanthropy through the BHCS Foundation, grants from the National Institutes of Health and other national organizations. BHCS also provides financial support.
Dr. Ramsay's anesthesia practice currently consists of the following areas of expertise: major organ transplantation, including liver, hearts and lungs; and cardiothoracic, vascular, neurological, pediatric and neonatal surgical cases. He developed the most widely used sedation scoring system in anesthesiology that is used in critical care units worldwide-the Ramsay Sedation Scale. In addition, he has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts and is an invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Ramsay attended London Hospital Medical College, London University. He joined Baylor in 1976 and was appointed chief of anesthesiology in 1989. He is the co-medical director of operating room services and is a member of the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Board of Trustees.
