Baylor Specialty Hospital
Baylor Specialty Hospital (BSH) focuses on continuing care for the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients. Because of chronic illness or frailty, some patients need additional hospital care before returning home. The hospital's highly trained multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and other professionals balance advanced technology and focused, compassionate care to treat patients with complex medical conditions and rehabilitation needs. The goal is to help each patient regain the best functioning possible, based on his or her condition.
BSH is located near the campus of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and also operates the 16-bed Baylor Specialty Hospital at Garland, within Baylor Medical Center at Garland, and the 14-bed Baylor Specialty Hospital at Irving, within Baylor Medical Center at Irving.
Highlights
Specialized Wound Care Services
Patients with wounds as a result of diabetes, pressure, peripheral vascular disease, trauma, infection or surgery benefit from the moist wound healing strategies used by the wound care team, which is comprised of physicians, enterostomal therapy nurses and therapists with advanced training in wound treatment. The program strives to decrease further complications caused by acute, chronic or complicated wounds and maximize the rate of healing. Wound care patients can continue their treatment through the outpatient arena, also available at BSH.
Pulmonary Care Program
Over time pulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, cause pulmonary dysfunctions and progressive debilitation. The pulmonary care program provides treatment to these patients to improve their quality of life and allows patients to have a healthy and enjoyable life within constraints of their disease. The program works to increase pulmonary endurance, physical conditioning and exercise performance, and emotional well being, while decreasing respiratory symptoms and complications.
Healing Environment Program
Patients at BSH enjoy colorful lighted panels depicting gardens, mountains and other nature scenes, designed to help make their hospital stay less stressful. These panels are installed in overhead ceiling lights, enabling the patient to see a pleasant, peaceful scene from their hospital bed. Monthly recreational therapy events such as musical entertainment or group-singing sessions of hymns or folk songs contribute to the hospital's healing environment.
Community Programs
College students studying to be future clinicians in physical and respiratory therapy and nursing receive important hands-on medical experiences during clinical practicums with highly trained clinical staff at BSH. Master's level nursing and speech pathology students are among other future health care professionals who receive clinical training at BSH. Hospital-wide community projects include the annual food drive for North Texas Food Bank conducted by BSH employees during the holiday season. For fiscal year 2007, Baylor Health Care System will report $390 million* in community benefit, which includes providing care for charity patients and patients enrolled in government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the unreimbursed costs of medical education, research and community programs.
