Baylor Health Care System Foundation
Baylor Health Care System Foundation raises and manages charitable funds to further Baylor Health Care System’s mission of serving all people through exemplary health care, medical education, research and community service.
Philanthropy dates back to Baylor’s beginnings. In 1903, when the thriving city of Dallas needed a new hospital, Col. C.C. Slaughter offered the first gift in a campaign to open the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium. Col. Slaughter’s gifts eventually totaled approximately $200,000, beginning a tradition of giving that flourishes today.
As a not-for-profit hospital system, Baylor relies on philanthropy to offer quality patient care, seek innovative treatments through medical research, train tomorrow’s medical professionals and serve the community. The Baylor Health Care System Foundation was established in 1978 as a separately incorporated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Since that time, the Foundation has distributed more than $325 million to Baylor Health Care System. With the support of the community, Baylor continues to achieve new levels of excellence to dramatically improve the lives of patients and the well-being of our community for generations to come.
Baylor continuously identifies system-wide improvements that will provide quality patient care for generations to come. To that end, the Foundation seeks funds for numerous projects each year. Among priority projects identified for the current fiscal year are:
- Heart and vascular research, education, and technology.
- Enhanced cancer initiatives at Baylor Dallas.
- Clinical research into ways to improve existing medical services and to introduce new types of medical treatments.
- Medical education for more than 200 residents and fellows in over 30 specialty and subspecialty programs.
- Increasing the pool of highly educated registered nurses and nursing leaders at Baylor hospitals.
- New facilities and technology for better patient care in all areas.
The Foundation offers services such as gift planning and holds events, including its annual Celebrating Women luncheon and Employee Giving campaign, to create an interactive resource for its 6,200 active donors and other interested members of the community. Last year’s Celebrating Women campaign raised more than $3.5 million for breast cancer research and technology.
