Highlights
Open Heart Surgery Program
In September 2007, a 60-year-old Haslet resident became the 500th open heart surgery patient at Baylor Grapevine, three years after the hospital initiated its open heart surgery program. In addition to open heart surgery, cardiac services at Baylor Grapevine have grown to include pacemaker implants and electrophysiology services, which allow cardiologists to restore normal heart rhythms through cardiac ablation. The medical center also offers a cardiac rehabilitation program to encourage cardiac patients to adopt healthy lifestyles, helping to prevent further heart disease.
Expanded Emergency Department
The new Baylor Grapevine emergency department (ED) expanded to 29 patient treatment rooms from the existing 22 to help meet the need for fast, immediate medical care in the growing northeast Tarrant County corridor. The universal patient treatment room design speeds patient care because the design allows patients of all acuity levels to be treated in nearly any ED treatment room. New signage along the area roadways mark the best route to the Baylor Grapevine ED for people traveling by private car. Ambulances now have a more direct route to the ED for State Highways 114 and 26.
Digital Mammography
Mammography helps identify breast cancer in its earliest stages. The new digital mammography technology computerizes the X-ray, enabling physicians to use a lower dose of radiation. Digital mammography is better than traditional film mammography for women who are under age 50; those who have dense breasts, and those who are pre- or peri-menopausal. A digital mammogram is available within seconds, meaning women can quickly return to their activities instead of waiting for a film mammogram to be read by the radiologist. While reading the digital mammogram, physicians can easily adjust the brightness and contrast and zoom into questionable areas for a more precise view. Baylor Grapevine offers digital mammography at Baylor Diagnostic Imaging Center at Keller.
Community Programs
At Baylor Grapevine, supporting local communities is important. Embracing the community through proactive community involvement aids in achieving the mission of Baylor Health Care System. Baylor Grapevine provides services such as health fairs, presentations, screenings, outreach programs and supplies to area school districts, chambers of commerce, health associations, churches, employers and civic organizations. A few notable free events include an annual Women's Health Day, focusing on women's health for all ages, and Men's Health Day, held in the summer. Baylor Grapevine serves area children through collaborations with the eight school districts in the medical center's service area.
For fiscal year 2007, Baylor Health Care System will report $390 million* in community benefit, which includes providing care for charity patients and patients enrolled in government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the unreimbursed costs of medical education, research and community programs.
