(FORT WORTH, Texas, February 24, 2007) - Baylor All Saints Medical Centers announced today that Maureen Madewell, R.N. was the March 2007 recipient of the DAISY Award. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.

Madewell, works in the Progressive Care Unit at Baylor All Saints. "Maureen has been an R.N. for thirty years. She chooses to stay at the bedside to work directly with patients and their families," says Sherree Bennett, R.N., nurse manager of the Progressive Care Unit. "Maureen is an exceptional nurse who is well loved and respected by patients, families, physicians and colleagues. She is a preceptor, teacher and a tremendous asset for Baylor All Saints."

One of Madewell's peers stated, "Maureen is truly an outstanding nurse and a team player. She embodies excellence in nursing and in patient care every day that she steps on our unit, and she is able to take the most challenging of assignments and make a difference in their care and in their outcomes. Maureen is able to recognize the slightest change in her patient and react appropriately as well as meeting their emotional needs. She is truly an excellent caregiver and embodies the very heart of the DAISY Award."

The DAISY Award is a nation-wide program that rewards excellence in nursing. The award was created by the Foundation for the Elimination of Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and recognizes the clinical skills, extraordinary compassion and care exhibited by nurses every day. It is given monthly to an outstanding nurse in more than 100 hospitals across the United States. Patients, visitors, employees or physicians may nominate a deserving nurse.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. Having been touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.

The DAISY Award is funded by the Faxel Endowment for Nurses. Ralph and Dee Faxel established the Faxel Endowment for Nurses through the All Saints Health Foundation. This fund provides scholarships, continuing education and certification assistance specifically for nursing.
