(PLANO, TEXAS April 19, 2007) - Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano is the first hospital in north Dallas and Collin County to offer minimally invasive surgery through the FDA approved
da Vinci® S Surgical System, a robotic platform designed to enable complex procedures through 1-2 cm incisions. The device has many surgical applications, including prostatectomy, urology, gynecology, surgical weight loss and general surgery.
Members of the community are invited to learn about and test drive the new technology on the following dates:
Thursday, May 10
Stonebriar Centre
2601 Preston Road
Frisco, Texas 75034
Lower lever, near JcPenney
11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Wednesday, May 16
Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano
4700 Alliance Blvd.
Plano, TX 75093
Plano Conference Room A/B, Garden Level
7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The robotic system consists of a surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a vision system and
EndoWrist® instruments. The advanced robotic technology is designed to scale, filter and translate the surgeon's hand movements into more precise movements of the instruments. The net result is an intuitive interface with advanced surgical capabilities.
Some of the benefits experienced by surgeons using the new technology over traditional approaches have been greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved agility, enhanced visualization and improved access. Potential patient benefits include a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal daily activities. None of these benefits can be guaranteed, as surgery can be both patient and procedure specific.
"Baylor Plano is pleased to be the only hospital in north Dallas and Collin County to offer this new and advanced technology to the members of our community. The robot offers our patients the option of less invasive procedures, helping patients get back to their lives sooner," said Jerri Garison, president, Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano.
"The robotic system magnifies and improves the viewing field of the surgical area, thereby helping the surgeon provide an increased quality of care for complex procedures. Potential for less blood loss and faster recovery is significantly improved when using this system," said Elie Benaim, M.D., urological surgeon, and member of the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano medical staff.
The urology, urogynecology and gynecology specialists on the medical staff at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano combine personalized care, clinical research, and patient education to diagnose, treat, and offer follow-up care for many urology and gynecology conditions, including urinary incontinence, reproductive system disorders, including infertility and erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, stone disease of the urinary tract, vasectomy and vasectomy reversal and gynecological cancer.
