(FORT WORTH, Texas, June 26, 2007) - Baylor All Saints Medical Centers announced today that Susan Samuel, R.N. was the May 2007 recipient of the DAISY Award. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.
Samuel is the day shift supervisor for B2S at Baylor All Saints. "Sue has a true passion for nursing and gives from the heart to all of us. She is a wonderful role model for everyone," says Tamara Schmidt, R.N., nurse manager of the B2S. "When we say 'only the best belong at Baylor', Sue is the best and we all appreciate her contributions and hard work. The DAISY Award is something we consider to be the highest honor that a nurse can receive and Sue is very deserving."
One of Samuel's peers stated, "Susan is an excellent clinical nurse and gives wonderful patient care. She is a great resource and always available when there is a question about patient care or whenever any help is needed on the floor with procedures. She is always striving for our unit to be better; to provide more consistent, comprehensive care, to continue learning and to be accountable for our actions. Susan works with new nurses on the floor because she wants them to succeed. She is always available to listen to her staff and help them in any way possible, whether it is professional or personal. As the night shift supervisor, she has taught me so much about how to be a good supervisor and how to work well with others. She is an excellent example of what a wonderful nurse is, and I know I strive to embody some of the same qualities."
The DAISY Award is a nation-wide program that rewards excellence in nursing. The award was created by the Foundation for the Elimination of Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and recognizes the clinical skills, extraordinary compassion and care exhibited by nurses every day. It is given monthly to an outstanding nurse in more than 100 hospitals across the United States. Patients, visitors, employees or physicians may nominate a deserving nurse.
The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. Having been touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.
The DAISY Award is funded by the Faxel Endowment for Nurses. Ralph and Dee Faxel established the Faxel Endowment for Nurses through the All Saints Health Foundation. This fund provides scholarships, continuing education and certification assistance specifically for nursing.
The not-for-profit Baylor All Saints Medical Centers serve more than 100,000 people annually through two hospitals, numerous primary care physician centers and practices, a rehabilitation and fitness center, and a variety of medical specialties.
