(FORT WORTH, Texas, December 17, 2007) - Baylor All Saints Medical Centers announced today that Sharon Mahan, R.N. was the September 2007 recipient of the DAISY Award. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.

Mahan works in Women's Services at Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth. "Sharon is an exemplary role model for the profession of nursing. She is the chairperson of the Nurse advisory Council and provides leadership on the postpartum unit/gynecology unit as a charge nurse," says Susie Garza, R.N., clinical manager, Women's Services. "In addition to her excellence in patient care, she is pursuing her degree in nursing. Her practice of nursing is reflective of her professionalism, commitment and servanthood by her focus on best care, patient education and support for all her patients and co-workers. She is very deserving as the recipient of this national recognition award."

One of Mahan's peers stated, "She is a great patient advocate. Sharon goes above and beyond to help mothers bond with their newborns. She is a wonderful example of what nursing is all about. She is a very caring and loving person."

The DAISY Award is a nation-wide program that rewards excellence in nursing. The award was created by the Foundation for the Elimination of Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and recognizes the clinical skills, extraordinary compassion and care exhibited by nurses every day. It is given monthly to an outstanding nurse in more than 100 hospitals across the United States. Patients, visitors, employees or physicians may nominate a deserving nurse.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. Having been touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.

The DAISY Award is funded by the Faxel Endowment for Nurses. Ralph and Dee Faxel established the Faxel Endowment for Nurses through the All Saints Health Foundation. This fund provides scholarships, continuing education and certification assistance specifically for nursing.
