Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine Announces New Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services

(GRAPEVINE, TEXAS – Feb.19, 2008) – Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine recently announced the opening of its new pulmonary rehabilitation program on Tuesday, February 5.
65 year-old Flower Mound resident, Gary Giles, was the program's first patient.
"My hope was to locate a good program that was close and convenient to my home," Giles stated. "Between the caring staff and great care that they gave me on my first visit, I know I made the right choice."
Giles was recently diagnosed with a chronic lung disease that has limited his ability to work.
"It is our desire through this program to get patients like Mr. Giles back to enjoying life and their daily activities, "Baylor Grapevine president Doug Lawson said. "Our pulmonary rehab staff is working hard to assist our community residents regain their independence."
The new program provides comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with mild to severe asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other pulmonary diseases. The goal of the program is to return patients to their highest possible functional capacity. The pulmonary rehabilitation team is made up of dedicated professionals with extensive training, experience and special interest in pulmonary health care and includes a medical director, registered nurses, a respiratory therapist, exercise physiologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist and registered dietician.
The outpatient program consists of two weekly visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is a medically supervised exercise and education program focusing on enhancing standard medical care to control and alleviate symptoms and optimize functional capacity for patients with pulmonary disease. The program includes:
- Evaluation of pulmonary status
- Assessments of exercise potential
- Exercise training and other therapeutic exercise (aerobic and strength)
- Group education classes
- Assessment for special needs (nutritional counseling, social services, etc.)
- Implementation of a home treatment program
