Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation - Outpatient Traumatic Brain Injury Program

Friends of Hope Camp

If you have suffered a brain injury, spending a day having fun and socializing can be uplifting and beneficial to the recovery process. To help, Baylor's Traumatic Brain Injury Program staff members work with "Friends of Hope," a day camp for survivors of brain injuries. This camp was established by Mary Carlile, M.D., a physician on the staff at Baylor who heads up the brain injury program at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation. This program brings TBI patients to churches across the Dallas/Fort Worth area to spend the day with volunteers doing activities and enjoying entertainment, food and fellowship.

The hosting facility recruits volunteers from their community to pair up with the TBI campers. They offer snacks for breakfast and a simple lunch for campers and volunteers. BIR therapy and nursing staff assist campers and volunteers as needed throughout the day and provide the activities, entertainment and administrative work. Host facilities need to have a community hall that is wheelchair friendly that can hold from 50 to 200 people and easily accessible bathroom facilities.

If you would like to participate in an upcoming Friends of Hope camp or churches wanting more information about hosting a camp can call Eva Wooster at 214-820-9988 or e-mail EvaWo@BaylorHealth.edu.
