Heart and Lung Transplants at Baylor

Since the first heart transplant at Baylor University Medical Center in March 1986 and first lung transplant in 1989, the heart and lung program has been providing new hope, restored health and freedom for patients suffering from end-stage heart and lung diseases. During this time, Baylor has achieved several milestones and has established itself as one of the area's leading providers of cardiothoracic transplantation.

Our multidisciplinary transplant team provides a full range of services, from pre-evaluation to long-term follow-up care, housing and support services.

Our comprehensive Heart Failure Program also helps manage ongoing health needs. In addition to monitoring medications and coordinating multidisciplinary care, we thoroughly assess your situation and develop strategies to help you manage your disease. We also offer access to clinical trials and remain available as long as you need us.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Program helps manage chronic illnesses that are difficult to diagnose and treat. Our goal is to be among the pioneers who develop treatment options and cultivate hope.

Meet James Zurlis

James Zurlis was looking forward to an active retirement, until he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. While on the heart transplant waiting list at Baylor Dallas, he received a left ventricular assist device as a bridge to transplant. He also participated in a research study to determine the effects of exercise on heart failure patients.

“What really helped was the exercise program and the wonderful care that I received. I’m well enough to go back to work, but I have other plans. At Baylor Dallas, I received a new heart and a second chance at retirement.”
